Cycling in the cold and dark

This time of year in Boston is rather depressing for the active urban outdoorist. The moderate temps we see in early fall have dropped, as has the colorful New England foliage. What’s leftover is a 4pm sunset and awkward temperatures that make the standard cycling commute more complicated. Fortunately, smart companies have noticed these problems and created gear to help us manage. Here’s a list of apparel and unique accessories for cold and nighttime cycling. All of these items were given to me for free.

Zackee's Turn Signal Gloves

Zackee's Turn Signal Gloves

Surprisingly bright. Surprisingly low profile. Unsurprisingly nerdy. I went in with low expectations and was shocked at how well these worked. Not sure how often I'm going to use them though - "turn signal gloves" aren't exactly in fashion.

Thunderbolt Sportswear Baseline Henley

Thunderbolt Sportswear Baseline Henley

This has become my go-to shirt (besides the MtnMeister T, of course). 100% merino wool, satisfying buttons, and a tailored fit. Priced at $110, I would have never bought this. After wearing it a few times I would reconsider.

Bar Mitts

Bar Mitts

Same deal as the turn signal gloves. If you can get over the fact that you have big mittens on your bike, you'll be psyched about Bar Mitts. These completely eliminate the wind on your hands which is a weird feeling - your hands are warm and at peace on your handlebars while the rest of your body is in the middle of winter.

Winglights

Winglights

Another nerdy pick. I suppose that's the nature of solving complicated problems. These are turn signals on the end of your handlebars and work as expected. Click a button and the light will flash at turn signal tempo, click it again to turn it off.

Showers Pass Alpine Jersey

Showers Pass Alpine Jersey

Even though it's black, there's a bunch of reflective tape lining this piece (13 to be exact). It also works as a mid-layer. I wore it on a windy ride the other day, and it expelled heat very well. The wind also went right through it, but it didn't bother me.

North St. Belmont Backpack

Super durable, customizable, waterproof, and night-friendly. Check out that big piece of reflective tape on the front flap. The bag is lined with a waterproof layer, which slightly reduces space but is worth it if you get caught in the rain.
